Adult Judo Nationals
The Adult Nationals were held on the 20 th and 21st of November at the National Indoor Area, Birmingham.
Saturday Saturday began with a huge course taught by all the dans being rotated through small groups. This also included a vast display of ukemi-kata . The whole mat was packed with a single formation of various grades. When the breakfalling hit a rythm the noise seemed to shake the whole room. Also during the morning, a large bunny rabbit from one of the London Clubs was kidnapped by the TJF for their own nefarious purposes. Fortunatly, it was liberated by sensei Nicola Brown at lunch time.
Saturday Night The club filled to capacity very rapidly and things started to get interesting. The TJF must have been worried about the effects of hung over people on the mat so they had booked a club with only half an hours worth of beer. Soon even the coke was gone and a massive scrum developed around the cloakroom who were completely unable to match people with coats let alone deal with with late arrivals. So we were all fresh as daiseys on Sunday morning.

Nick Tuley made TJF Sword Coach
The Jitsu syllabus is consantly being refined by the TJF. One of the things to come out of the latest review is a feeling that the classical weapon work has been neglected of late.
Katana (sword) and bo (staff) work will now be improved by appointing knowledgable instructors who will teach special courses.
This will probably involve the adoption of a uniform kata for these weapons and certainly more testing in higher gradings.
Sensei Nick Tuley has been appointed the first sword coach and will be running the first course next April. Sensei Nigel Price has been appointed the bo coach and will run his first course in March.
The study of classical weapon work in Jitsu is not universally liked and Jitsuka welcomes all debate on the subject.

Absolutely everybody is going including you. Yes, you. We have a whole month to practice and it will put everybody in the mood for ...
Grading
20 March Manchester Met.
The next grading is being conducted by sensei Hamer in Manchester. This will be a massive event and covers all grades up do dark blue. The most probable format is a split into two sessions, one for junior and senior grades. Preston has a lot of novices who really should have graded by now and senior grades who have been getting far too comfortable so we will be sending a big group. If everything goes well, we should all be able to come back and pass our belts down the line.
Instructor Training
6 March Sheffield University
Assistant Instructor, Instructor and Club
Instructor.
7 March Bristol University
Looking at injuries specific to the grappling arts and high impact training. Includes therapy and treatment of injuries.
Respect is Due
The gradings at the end of last year mean that our mats are now rather more colourful.
Terry Gillgrass
Terry got an early Christmas present on the very first tertiary visit after he made brown belt. He has been given a teaching mandate by the Jitsu Foundation. Not only is this a notable sign of confidence in itself, but it is the first step towards a black belt.
Sensei Gilgrass will be teaching at the town club on the Saturday session.
Jitsuka's top reporting team have just got back from the Judo Nationals so those of you who went can re-live the glory. As for those you did not go, where were you ? Now is the time to start planning for the Atemi Nationals next year. Q&A this issue will be handled by an anonymous expert known only as The Scarlet Lady. The next issue will be out next year and will have the results of the gradings and details of everything happening next year.

Welcome to this special collectors edition of Jitsuka, the news letter for all things Jitsu related in Preston.
As well as news we hope to be bringing you articles, opinions, letters, cartoons, complaints, scandals, high drama and answering all of your questions.
To that end, I would like you (yes, you) to send any articles, opinions, letters, cartoons, complaints, high drama and bewildered questions to

University Club
The new academic year has just begun and as usual there has been a good influx of beginners into the University Club.
Training times for the University Club have changed with the Saturday session moving to Tuesday. This is a great improvement because more students can attend Tuesdays. The new training times are:-
Gi Orders
New gis (jitsu suits) can now be obtained from Nick Tuley for only £26. They come straight from the manufacturer which is a lot cheaper and quicker than the previous system.
Iaido
Iaido is the martial art concerned entirely with the use of the samurai sword. There are very few people practising iaido in Britain. We have had the good fortune to obtain an instructor for a year and have started up a club in Preston. If you are interested in sword work, then this is the best opportunity for study you are ever likely to get.
Be warned though that iaido is not something to dabble in. Learning is done by set patterns which are then polished by constant practice. So, although everybody is welcome to come and try or watch, there is no point joining properly unless you are prepared to attend regularly.
Training is Monday 8.30 - 10 at West View Leisure Centre.
Regional Courses
Regional courses will be held on October 24 in Preston. These courses give everybody the chance to train with people from different clubs. If you want to grade at the end of the year then you must attend one of the courses.
Junior Judo Nationals 1998
This years junior judo nationals were held on Sunday 18 October at Cocks Moores leisure Centre
in Birmingham.
As the name suggests, this was a judo rules competition where grades do randori, novices do sumo-waza and everybody does back-to-back.
There was also a high level grading in the morning.
There was a huge gang from Preston including Terry, Peter, Chris, Mark, Florica, Terri-Louise, Ross, Grace, Priya and Daniel and Paul Mercer. Needless to say, everybody fought well and bought back a total haul of 5 gold medals and two silver medals.
The hero of the day was defiantly Terry Gilgrass who graded to brown in the morning and then picked up two gold medals in the afternoon.
The full results are :
| Terry Gillgrass | 2 Gold |
| Daniel Mercer | 2 Gold |
| Chris Miller | 1 Gold |
| Peter Mitchel | 2 Silver |
