The Jitsu Foundation is the organisation which co-ordinates the activities of Jitsu clubs and the development of Jitsu. In effect, it is what ensures that the Jitsu you do is worthwhile and of the highest possible standard. The benefits to you are as follows.
Insurance is very important. Not only does it provide support in case of injury, but the need to satisfy insurers about safety helps to make injuries less likely to happen in the first place. The whole point of Jitsu is to make you as safe as possible.
There are also other benefits. TJF members are covered for all the training they do in any Jitsu club, not just clubs they happen to be members of. This means that you can train in the town club as well as the University Club. It also means that in between terms you can train in the club in your home town so never need to get out of practice.
As you become more skilful, you will wish to prove that you can move on to more advanced material by being assessed and measured against other students. All Jitsu gradings are administered by officials of the Jitsu Foundation. You will not be graded by somebody who has been teaching you or who even knows what club you are from. This means that the grading is impartial and that standards are consistent.
Unlike most martial arts, the right to teach is not simply a benefit of a particular grade. We believe that teaching is a skill in itself which must be developed. Mid level grades must attend teaching courses if they wish to continue to grade and are gradually used more and more to help with classes by the sensei. Brown belts are not even considered for black belts until they have successfully run a club for at least two years. They are judged partly on the performance of their students.
This assessment never stops. TJF instructors make regular visits to all Jitsu clubs to teach fresh material and to see if any problems are occurring. If extra support fails to solve these problems then the teaching license is withdrawn from the instructor no matter what grade they are.
