Why do we do it?

I do not know why you should, but I can tell you why I do.

I have been doing Jitsu for eight years, teaching for five of them and it has not been easy. Far from it, it has been a challenge. A lot of blood, sweat and tears - well, buckets of sweat, occasional blood and I will not admit to the tears.

I took up Jitsu because I had always liked martial arts. I tried the rest and settled on the best. I wanted, like most people to be safe - to be able to defend myself if I was attacked. My mother had always told me to run away from a fight. Good advice; but what about the times when you can not run or do not want to run. That is when you need something like Jitsu.

After a couple of years of training I was a blue belt and, yes, I could defend myself. If that was all I wanted I was finished. But, Jitsu was now in my blood. I wanted so much more than self defence. The adrenaline rush when you are attacked in a line up, the euphoria of completing a gauntlet untouched, the camaraderie of going back to back with somebody, win or lose, having a hard fight and then drinking with them. The sense of achievement of walking onto a mat with a new belt. The pride of being awarded hakama by my instructor. And finally being able to pass all of this on to my own students and see their achievements.

I have made many friends across the country in the family of Jitsu. But above all, I do it because I enjoy it.

I will do my best that you do too.
